Message In A Virtual Bottle

by Stew Shaw on July 14, 2009

Who can predict the reach of something we say or write or video today? Much like the legendary stories you hear of messages in bottles landing ashore years later in some faraway land to the astonishment not only of the original sender but also the recipient, not to mention the general public. Truly the possibilities are limitless.

This thought crossed my mind in the last few hours as I beavered away all through the night on my fast-tracked mission to establish some sort of baseline online presence. For you see, the well known “seek and you shall find” truism resulted not only in my discovering timely advice written 2 1/2 years ago but in my buying a WordPress Premium theme from the writer. To me the latter was well worth the price of admission, so to speak. Let me explain the riddle.

Chris P has blogged and coded his way into WordPress theme development folklore from what I can tell already. More importantly for the wider community it’s quite apparent that he’s clued in on what works in an online business and what doesn’t. He makes clear that distinction in his piece How Can 10 Simple Articles Change Your Life? where he drove home the message that it’s not your use of technology that matters so much as what you say. Or as he put it: “The equity lies in what your content is, not how it got there.” [his emphasis]

Those of us less experienced in online matters far too easily fall into the trap of seeking out the ’shiniest’ tools, ever hunting for a better piece of software or hardware, or chasing down expensive internet marketing secrets released by one guru after another. It seems to me to be an out of control trend at this very time, especially in the crowded Internet marketing arena.

Well this writer, for one, is going to be doing less of it starting immediately. It’s time to just go ahead and promote and produce content and/or products that are useful. Sounds a novel idea doesn’t it!

Thanks Chris. Oh and I love the WP theme too.
